ABOUT THE ARTIST

Randy Maultasch first became interested in glass when he saw the glass art of master glass artists Galle and Daum in 1973. Soon after, he saw the glass art of LaFarge and Tiffany and began to learn the process of creating glass art. In 2011, he founded the Maultasch Glass Studio and dedicated himself to making the finest glass panels he could create. Mr. Maultasch does not use any paint in his work and uses the finest hand made glass in his panels. He works with rare, out of production glass that he has collected for more than 35 years along with glass made by Bullseye and Uroboros, two of the top creators of glass today. His “Lady Justice” panel was designed and created by him as a commission for the Honorable Victoria R. Brennan, a Circuit Court Judge in Miami-Dade County, and is the first glass art hanging in a courtroom in Miami-Dade. Mr. Maultasch is also a criminal defense attorney who began his legal career as a prosecutor 33 years ago and practices law in the same courthouse where his “Lady Justice” now hangs.

ABOUT THE GLASS

While commonly referred to as “stained glass”, the glass that Mr. Maultasch uses is not stained in the dictionary meaning of the word stained as something that is placed on the surface to color it such as wood or leather staining. Instead, the glass is colored through and through when made. It is rolled out by hand into sheets which are then used by Mr. Maultasch to create his glass art. Because it is made by hand, each sheet of glass is unique. Mr. Maultasch uses primarily opalescent glass in his panels along with small amounts of antique and antique flashed glass. His panels typically contain hundreds if not thousands of pieces of numerous types of glass shaped by hand to the precise size and shape required for his glass art. Some of his panels contain more than one layer of glass to enhance the color, depth and texture of the panel. His works are large and range from nine to twenty-three square feet.
